Live Tweeting is an easy way to add energy and excitement to any occasion. However, it is possible to miss the mark and even do damage to your event with poorly timed, framed and unplanned content.  So to help you out, we have put together our top tips for a successful live Twitter campaign. Early November 2017 saw the 41st Brick Awards take place, a firm fixture in the architectural calendar celebrating innovation and craft using the humble brick in modern design. Ridgemount PR was set the task of "Live Tweeting" the event to make sure the whole architectural community joined the #BrickAwards2017 conversation.   

Earning over a million impressions for the event’s hashtag '#BrickAwards2017' as well as hundreds of tweets and pictures posted throughout the event, we like to think it was a great success.

So here are our top tips to running a successful Twitter event campaign; feel free to share, like and retweet.

Top 5 Tips for Successful Live Tweeting

1. Plan in advance

Save yourself an awful lot stress and panic by pre-loading your content into a media distributing tool. For the Brick Awards, we used a free tool called Sprout Social. This meant we could upload all of the tweets that we wanted to post out on the night well in advance of the event. No frantic typing as the winners were announced, all tweets went out with the touch of a button at the right time having been checked and checked again.

2. A picture tells a thousand words

Picture posts generate 150% more retweets than words alone*. The top retweeted posts earning the highest reach on the night of the awards all had images attached to them. Again this is something that can be pre-planned. If you are tweeting about a presentation, always make sure you have images of the slides before the event as a photo of a screen or projector never looks good.

3. It takes two to tango

When tweeting, always @ the person you are talking about, open up a dialogue and speak to the other people tweeting about your event. Not only does this make your brand more friendly but it also means your content will reach further as it will also spread into other users' feeds. It is helpful to have a list of the usernames of people you know attending the event before you start your tweeting, this way you don’t have to search on the day for the right username. Also, always make sure you encourage people to use your hashtag.

4. Sharing is Caring

Don't just rely on your own tweets to build up the event feed, share content from the people tweeting at you or using your hashtag. It will add greater gravitas to your event if people see others tweeting about it. Spread the word.

5. Real time content

As important as it is to pre-plan content, never forget to be reactive and to post in real time. We had great success with live video and ad-hoc images throughout the night. With one user tweeting "Absolutely loved following the #BrickAwards2017 tonight found it very exciting even from house!"
